Building on its tradition of community service, Shore Scholars introduced a new service model this semester: group‑based projects centered on collaboration with community partners and the opportunity to present about their projects in front of peers. This approach expanded opportunities for students to apply leadership, teamwork, and communication skills in real‑world settings.
Working in small teams, scholars partnered with local nonprofits to design and carry out hands-on service projects that addressed real community needs. Through their presentations, students reflected on both the work completed and the leadership, communication, and collaboration skills they developed through a practical introduction to philanthropy and community service.
Growing Dreams at Courtney Elementary School
One group partnered with Courtney Elementary School to reimagine an outdoor courtyard space, now known as the “Garden of Dreams.” Scholars spent the day rebuilding planter boxes, replanting flowers, restoring seating, and adding stepping stones to make the space more accessible for students.
“Our why is very simple when it comes to this project,” the group shared. “Growth. Just as we watch plants in a garden grow, we watch society grow every day.” One scholar reflected that “it wasn’t just the finished product that brought satisfaction, but the idea that we had brought actual change to not only children but a whole community.”
Inspiring Creativity with Smart Start of Yadkin County
Another team supported Smart Start of Yadkin County by volunteering at a community Block Party focused on creativity and early learning. Students helped facilitate hands-on play activities for children and families.
“The outcome of our project was quite good,” the group shared. “Each of the kids had the freedom to use their creativity to build and create whatever they wanted… Even the parents enjoyed playing and building with their kids.”
Creating Stability Through Impact Yadkin
A third group partnered with Impact Yadkin to assist with a home improvement project for a family in need. Scholars worked together to paint and complete multiple rooms in a single day.
“From this experience we learned that service goes beyond just doing a task,” one student shared. “It was about making a real impact on people’s lives.”
Supporting Families at the Compassion Care Center
Another team volunteered with the Compassion Care Center in Yadkinville, sorting baby clothes, organizing maternity items, and packaging diapers for families.
“Even small efforts can make someone’s day a little easier,” one scholar reflected. Another added that “packing diapers or organizing clothes might not seem like a big deal, but knowing families depend on those exact items made it feel really real.”
These projects were made possible through the guidance of dedicated mentors, including Tasha Williams and Natalie Vestal, whose encouragement and support made a meaningful difference for our students. We are deeply grateful to Courtney Elementary School, Smart Start of Yadkin County, Impact Yadkin, and the Compassion Care Center for welcoming our scholars and sharing their missions.
The Shore Scholars program is a partnership between the Shallow Ford Foundation and Yadkin County Schools, designed to increase the number of local students pursuing continuing education through meaningful engagement, mentorship, and peer support. The program offers workshops, individualized guidance, and hands-on experiences that build confidence and practical skills for postsecondary career and vocational pathways.
